Lilly Singh’s YouTube return separates bigger production from outside control
Lilly Singh is returning to YouTube sketch comedy with “My First Day Back at YouTube,” according to an October 15 interview on the YouTube Official Blog. For creators considering bigger productions, the useful detail is how she plans to change the work behind the camera: add specialist collaborators while keeping the storytelling decisions independent.
Singh says her earlier decade of YouTube production largely relied on a small, scrappy team. Working on traditional sets showed her what dedicated props, set design and writing departments could contribute. She now plans to bring proper art and production departments into her YouTube work, rather than carry so much of the creative load herself.
That’s a specific way to think about expanding a team. If you’re considering a larger production, her approach suggests hiring around the parts of a story that need stronger execution, without assuming the channel’s voice also needs to become broader. Singh describes receiving Hollywood notes asking her to make projects more marketable or less niche; she wants the collaboration without those compromises.
Distribution also shaped the return. Singh says longtime fans in India, the UK, and Trinidad and Tobago couldn’t watch her recent feature film, Doin’ It, because of traditional distribution arrangements. For her, publishing on YouTube means returning to an audience that already understands—or wants to learn about—the Punjabi and Caribbean references in her comedy.
Her circumstances are important, though. Singh explicitly credits her financial stability with letting her create for enjoyment rather than maintain her former Monday-and-Thursday uploads alongside daily vlogs. This isn’t evidence that fewer uploads or larger crews will improve another channel’s results. It’s a production model she can now choose: preserve the specific voice that built the audience, and use additional collaborators to make more ambitious work around it.
